October is LGBT History Month, and Montgomery College will have many programs throughout the month to celebrate. At Rockville’s campus, Professors Genevieve Carminati and Deborah Stearns are working on a panel program for the end of the month. The tentative topic will be “Is Homophobia Dead?” a question that means to address the changing and current attitudes towards and awareness and representation of the LGBT community. I will be showing an episode of the television series “Transgeneration,” to be followed by a student discussion (date TBA). Finally, perhaps most exciting of all, MC has a college-wide effort to produce a “Making It Better” film, which will feature faculty LGBT community members and allies.
We’ve come a long way, baby, but our visibility should not be taken for granted. MC is doing a great job of recognizing our presence and our importance. That’s enough to be proud about.
